My friend Bu’er was venting on her blog this morning and it brought to mind something that I often think about. My dad bought a car back in 1971 for $250 brand new. No loan he had to take out or anything, jsut paid for it out-right. WTF!?!?!?!?! That’s what my car note runs a month. Things were affordable back then. My dad bought our house in 1973 for $26,000 and had it paid off in 5 years. Why? Because things didn’t cost out the ass and require the payment of your first-born child. He didn’t make much a year either and was still able to save enough money to do that. Don’t get me wrong. It wasn’t ratty by any standard.
Our house (that Dad still owns and has all our stuff in, but none of us live there) is a 4 bedroom, 2 bath, 2 car garage sitting on 2 acres of land – house. It’s not a mansion, but it’s by no means a shack either. It’s sitting in a nice, quiet neighborhood. One that is secluded and people love and would love to live there. And we ate 3 square meals a day. Always had a freezer full of food and we didn’t have to shop in thrift stores for the clothes on our back. Want to know how much MY house cost? Almost 4 times that. Let me repeat that…FOUR TIMES THAT! Six friggin figures!
Why in God’s name does everything cost so damned much now? Where did everything start going to shit and cost everyone out the ass jsut to get by? I think Bu’ers right. People are greedy these days. Where did our country go wrong to let things get to this extreme? Please explain to me why a single parent with 3-4 kids, not making a whole hell of alot, doesn’t qualify by govt. standards to get reduced meals for their kid’s school lunches. A single income family that can’t afford shit! Ok, so I’m ranting. But somewhere along the way, this country has gone to shite. Why is it that now you have to make almost 6 figures a year to provide a decent life for your children(depending on where you live in this country)? Where did we mess up along the way? And why did we let it happen? Gah, I miss the old days.
